What is a Duck Stamp?:
The Duck Stamp is a stamp issued by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service that is required to hunt migratory birds. Each hunter over the age of 16 must have one in order to hunt waterfowl.
The origin of the popular Duck Stamp is the Migratory Bird Hunting Stamp of 1934. The funds generated by the sales of these stamps are used for the acquisition or lease of wetlands, with 98 cents of every dollar going towards purchase. This not only benefits birds, but also the other flora and fauna that inhabit these regions. Additionally, presenting the Federal Duck Stamp will gain one free entrance into National Wildlife Refuges.

Design Contest:
There is a yearly contest for artists to design the next year’s Duck Stamp that is open to U.S. citizens, nationals and resident aliens over the age of 18. Each year the Fish & Wildlife Service chooses five species that can be represented on the stamp. There is a $125 fee to enter the contest. In addition to acclaim and recognition, the winner receives a pane of stamps signed by the Secretary of the Interior; he or she will travel to certain wildlife ceremonies and may be asked to be a guest speaker; and will get the opportunity to market their winning image and other works for publication.
