for About.com

Take advantage of the many opportunities to see stamps you might not ever see and learn more about philately and postal history. The sites listed below are those of online galleries, museums and stamp exhibits. While some are parts of museums or other large organizations, many are done by ordinary stamp collectors.

Explore these links both to expand your philatelic horizons and to get some ideas for your own future exhibits.

British Postal Museum and Archive

The British Postal Museum offers several exhibits concerning various aspects of British Postal History including the postal service during the World Wars, Valentine's Day and regional stamps. It is informative and interesting with numerous images. The British invented the postage stamp and this site gives a good account of the variety of the UK postal experience.

1 Cent Franklin Stamp Exhibit

This is an excellent example of what an individual collector can do. Originally a live exhibit in 1996, presenter K. David Steidley offers a varied look at the usages of the 1903 Franklin stamp. This exhibit offers both information on the stamp and several well-presented postal items using the stamp. There are a variety of covers from different regions and usages.

Malaria Philatelists International Exhibits

What might seem to be a limited subject for stamp collecting turns out to have a great deal of depth and range. These exhibits, many of which won awards at various competitions, offer many different malaria stamps and postal items. The exhibits have a lot of information on the stamps and the history behind them.

Canadian Postal Museum - Online Exhibits

Canada, like Great Britain, offers a virtual look at numerous aspects of their postal history. A chronology, early airmail and dogsled post are some of what is offered. The exhibits have a lot of pictures and excellent scans of stamps. The site is a work in progress as new exhibits are being planned. A good place to go for enthusiasts of Canadian philately.

Aerogramme Exhibits

Air-post stationery is a popular collecting specialty, which is reflecting in the variety of exhibits on this site. The presentations offered represent many different countries and topics. Many focus on wartime aerogramme usage which was some of the highest seen, as aerogrammes were one of the most efficient ways to send information to war zones and back. These exhibits are a good example of the richness a philatelic specialty can offer.

Scout Stamps - Online Exhibits

Like several of the sites on the list, this site is a launching point to a number of exhibits. The Scouts on Stamps organization is one of the more dynamic topical organizations. This part of their site offers a great deal of information on their topic as well as on exhibiting in general.

The exhibits present numerous stamps and postal history about Scouting, but also stamps related to the merit badges Scouts earn. An especially interesting display is the one that provides examples of various postal material representing items needed to earn the stamp collecting merit badge.

Smithsonian Institution & National Postal Museum - Online Exhibits

Arago is part of the online presence of the National Postal Museum, a collaborative effort between the United States Postal Service and the Smithsonian Institute. The Museum is the repository of the impressive "national stamp collection" as well as a vast collection of pieces related to the postal history of the United States. Arago offers numerous online of exhibits covering a wide range of topics including duck stamps, Native Americans on stamps, and American Art. There is also the "Alphabetilately" exhibit which offers fascinating images for each letter in the alphabet. All the exhibits are well organized and contain many well-done scans and pictures.
