On October 13, 1775 the Continental Congress authorized the establishment of a Navy to fight the British. The first ships commissioned included USS Alfred, Andrew Doria, Cabot, and Columbus. One of the first American heroes, John Paul Jones, was a noted ship commander whose most famous quote was "I have not yet begun to fight!"
