This year marks the 36th year that a Love stamp has been issued by the U.S. Postal Service. This year's issues are based on 18th century playing cards. The images are computer designed by Jeanette Greco of New York City. Playing cards go as far back as the 9th Century T'ang Dynasty of China. The 52 card deck used today has its roots in the 15th Century, coming from Egypt and quickly spreading through Europe. According to tradition, the King of Hearts represents King Charles of France, but whether it is Charlemagne or Charles VII is still up for debate. The Queen of Hearts traditionally represents Old Testament figure Judith.
