While collectors of FDCs look around and see fewer of themselves, at least as shown in membership numbers from the clubs, let's remember that everything is cyclical and better days are probably on the way. But in the meantime...
Why not take those lemons and make lemonade? Take advantage of the lull to add some bargains to your collection. If interest in a collecting area is down, so are prices -- especially of classics that have been going down for almost a decade. Why not get some before the bounce starts?
Although we can sympathize with the clubs that are losing members, we must also consider that the bidder in an auction for rare FDCs might find less competition and -- as day follows night -- more bargains.
When I came to the FDC collecting world back in the 80s, prices were flying high, thanks to speculation in many areas of stamp collecting. Classic cachets by the likes of Roessler, Rice, Grimsland, Anderson, Bert and others were in great demand and covers were realizing auction prices that kept the average collector from adding these historic items to their collections. If you've ever considered acquiring some of these items for your collection now may be the time.
