"The Admiral Byrd Expedition to Antarctica, and establish Little America, was sponsored by the National Geographic Society and seeking financial contributions which proved to be a daunting task in the midst of America's great depression. Gilbert Grosvenor, the president of the National Geographic Society, eventually called on his friend, Bernard Gimbel, president of the Gimbel and Saks Department Store chain, for help. Mr. Gimbel, in turn, suggested bringing his good friend Jacques Minkus into the deliberations. Jacques Minkus was my uncle, who had initiated my immigration affidavit to America, and was not only Mr. Gimbel's friend, but owned and operated the philatelic departments throughout the Gimbel chain of stores as president of the Minkus Philatelic enterprises."
