It was back in November that I looked ahead to the release of the two stamps shown above. Well since then there have been some unusual developments about the stamp featuring Lady Liberty. Or I should say the stamp featuring the ersatz Lady with the Torch, the one in front of the New York-New York casino in Las Vegas. The same one that appears on the stamp.
Yes, there probably should have been more oversight that would have prevented a replica, instead of the real Lady Liberty, that very visible beacon of freedom in New York City's harbor, from appearing on a postage stamp. But it has happened and on the Scandal-o-Meter this miscue rates pretty low. It's all symbolic, anyway, isn't it?
Does anybody ruthlessly mock those who bring home those six inch tall Empire State Buildings as a souvenir of their trip to The Big Apple because it isn't the real building? Of course not. The only thing that bothers me about the whole affair is the news about the plaque that is fairly visible on one of her crown spikes. Although Americans themselves may not be perfect, I'd prefer that at least our national symbol stay blemish free.
