The third postage stamp featuring Ronald Regan was unveiled at the The Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and Museum this past Monday.
Artist Bart Forbes of Plano Texas based his rendering of President Reagan on a photo taken at Reagan's Rancho Del Cielo in 1985. He "captured the essence of the man," said USPS Board of Governors member James Miller III, keynote speaker at the stamp's unveiling.
"If I have my way about it, The Ronald Reagan Centenniel stamp will be a forever stamp," continued Miller, the feeling behind his words implying that forever had greater meaning to him than just a category of postage. But in fact, while the publicity design of the stamp shows a 44 cent denomination, when it is released for sale Feb. 10, 2011 it will be a USPS Forever Stamp. Collectors following ongoing USPS news won't be too excited about this, as they know virtually all U.S. commemoratives will be Forever Stamps, good for first class postage "forever."
In speaking of the great number of letters the president known as The Great Communicator sent to those who had contacted him via the mails, Miller gave the USPS a pat on the back when he said, "And he relied on the postal service to deliver each and every one of them!"
