It's the 29th year for National Stamp Collecting Month. One of the main points of the month-long festivities is to get kids involved in the hobby -- not an easy thing to do today, when access to a vast array of entertainment and information is at our fingertips.
For its part the USPS is releasing the final issues in its Nature of America series, the Hawaiian Rain Forest pane and stamped postal cards. Last year's pane from the set was unveiled underwater at the Monterey Bay Aquarium, perhaps one of the most dramatic unveilings ever.
Also participating in NSCM -- from a distance -- are 31 Air Force and Department of State Post Offices in Europe. This will be their 15th year of participation in the event. Aside from community and educational events for kids, Air Force Post Offices (APOs) will be giving away $20,000 in philatelic items to members of the military. Yvonne Radloff, the USAFE postal branch public affairs officer said that giveaway items include Disney series such as Imagination, Celebration and Romance Post Cards and Prints. Sunday Funnies Keepsake, Space Discovery, Simpsons and Marvel Super Heroes are also among commemorative and philatelic sets and series that will be freebies.
What will you be doing to celebrate "the hobby of kings and the king of hobbies" this month?
